I am absolute huge fan of spiders; they're my favorite animal. So it's no surprise that I get a little bit excited when I see one.

This particular spider looked like a black widow but did not have the red hourglass on the underside of its abdomen, so I assume that it is a steatoda spider. I was thinking about capturing it with a plastic container, it was right within reach so I could do so. Unfortunately, I shook the drawer where it had its little web in the corner and it retreated.

My preferred course of action was to simply capture it, potentially examine it and eventually set it free. But it made itself quite at home in the corner, tucked away inconspicuously. I later looked under the drawer and I saw a lot of little bugs that it caught including other spiders, bugs I'd rather not see roaming around.

What should I do with it? Is it okay to just leave it there; will it ever wander away from its web? Or is it a good idea to release it so it doesn't wander off and tuck itself in a undesirable area? I'd hate to force it to leave its home, and that large stash of bugs under the drawer is making me consider that it would be an okay idea to let it stay.

My main concern is whether it'll wander off or not. If it doesn't, that'll motivate me to let it stay. But I'm not sure if that's a good idea. What do you guys think?

I am beginning to wonder if something is wrong with one of my southern house spiders (Kukulcania hibernalis). She has been "morbidly obese" for several months now, even though I have not been feeding her, and she has molted at least twice since she last mated.

"Would you roll the young lady down to the juicing room at once, please."

The last time she molted was in September 2012. In December, I noticed that she was not slimming between meals. I assumed that the summer feeding schedule was too much for her slower winter metabolism, so I stopped feeding her as often. At one point, I went 2-3 months without feeding her, waiting until she looked like she needed more food. (I still misted her web once or twice a week.) She never did. That's when I began to wonder if she could produce multiple sacs from a mating that occurred months before. On April 1, I broke down and fed her again, because I didn't want to starve her if she was gravid.

It has been another month since I fed her, and she looks bigger than ever. Her abdomen is stretched so thin, even compared to the pictures I took last spring when she was gravid. My other spider has mated and produced a sac, so I would think that if the fat spider were gravid, she would have produced a sac by now.

Has anyone ever had this issue or know what might be causing it? My husband's theory is that something went awry during her last molt, and there is a blockage that is preventing her from expelling waste. I am not sure about that, because I think she was going when she was in her last jar.
