Eyes

Total of eight eyes, arranged in a manner typical of all jumping spiders (family Salticidae). Spider must usually be viewed from above to see the two posterior (back) eye rows, which are located on the back of the carapace (they are visible in our diagram, but only partially). The anterior median eyes (AME) are the two largest, round, forward-facing pair. The two eyes adjacent to those in the front are the anterior lateral eyes (ALE). Located further back on the carapace are the two rows of posterior eyes. The tiny ones are the posterior median eyes (PME), and in the very back are the posterior lateral eyes (PLE).

Legs

Legs short, relatively thick, and very hairy. Tip of each leg has 2 claws. In adults of both genders, legs are black with indistinct white or gray bands. In adult males, the front pair of legs are the thickest and have long, conspicuous tufts of white and black hairs. Juvenile specimens may have black and red or black and orange banded legs.

Body

This species is mostly black with a conspicuous white, orange, or red triangular patch in the center of its abdomen. This is quite a stocky spider; some have likened it to a miniature tarantula. Chelicerae (jaws) have a gorgeous, iridescent sheen to them and come in a variety of colors; the most common being metallic green or blue, but occasionally pink or purple. Keep in mind, like many species of jumping spider, the “Bold Jumper” is highly variable because it changes somewhat in color and pattern after each molt.

Range of Phidippus audax

Phidippus audax can be found in the following states, provinces and territories across the United States and Canada. Our current understanding of each spider's distribution is drawn from numerous scientific publications and online spider submissions, in order to be as accurate as possible. It is important to remember that spiders do not adhere to the territorial lines decided on by humans, therefore these ranges are subject to change.

Important Range Notes

In addition to the range listed below, Phidippus audax is also found in the Nicobar Islands.

Additional Information

Habitat

Look for Phidippus audax on the exterior walls of buildings, on rocks and logs in old fields and prairies, and in low vegetation in open woodlands.

Web

This species is a hunting spider that does not spin a web for prey capture. However, they do use silk for drag lines and constructing egg sacs and retreats. They use their excellent, up-close vision for judging distances and being able to jump at prey with extraordinary accuracy.

Season

It matures and mates in the spring throughout most parts of its range, but in warmer, more tropical climates (such as Florida), it’s possible to find adults of both sexes at any time of year (Edwards 2004).

Food

Prey is any arthropod (insect, spider, or otherwise) that the spider is able to subdue.

Lifecycle

In early summer, the female will deposit her eggs within a silken sac that she attaches under the bark of a tree, old log, or rock (or in some other type of crevice). Each sac can have anywhere from 50 to 200 orange-colored eggs within it. The female spider will usually stand guard over the eggs.

Remarks

Careful, this species can look remarkably similar to some forms of Phidippus regius; the adult males of the two species are almost inseparable, except by the experienced eye.
